Turn In The Best Job Application Before Anyone Else

I've read a lot of job applications for California State civil service jobs. I've also read a lot of law student essay exams as a former law professor. They have some things in common, chief among them, the fact that they are persuasion pieces. Based on my experience reviewing both, I tell my California State Jobs Bootcamp clients this:
Turn in the best job application before anyone else does.
Why?
1. Setting the bar/psychological advantage: Whether it was the first excellent job application I reviewed or first excellent law school essay exam question I read, for me, it set the bar against which all the other job applications/law school essay exams would be compared, especially if it was among the first I reviewed/read.
2. Review fatigue: If you read the same kind of document over and over again for grading or comparison's sake, at some point, review fatigue sets in. You're not as sharp as you were at the beginning of the process and may have to re-read or re-review what you've read in order to give it an objective review. You don't want your job application to be subject to review fatigue, so get it in early.
3. Snagging the interview early: There may be only so many interview spots, so you want your application to not only stand out but be among the first to be reviewed so you snag an interview spot before your competitors. It is, after all, a competition.
All of this depends on submitting a job application that stands head and shoulders above the rest. I tell my clients, "I want your application to be the one all others are compared to. I want you to wipe the floor with your competition and leave them to scramble over the leftover interview spots."
Yes, I'm a little competitive.
How do you write a California State civil service job application that is head and shoulders above the rest? In the words of Kelis, "I could teach you, but I'd have to charge."
The next California State Jobs Bootcamp is Saturday, June 7, 6:00 pm Pacific Time.
